s a child, I was never drawn to children's movies. They seemed simplistic and didn't reflect the invisible complexity of the world as I experienced it. I was more drawn to the crazy chaos of the Marx Brothers, James Dean's anger, the rawness of Dylan and Lennon. These artists seemed to somehow make sense of the world, no matter how insane. I remember very clearly the first time I saw West Side Story. Natalie Wood's grief and anger moved me beyond anything I had ever felt before, because it made visible to me the invisible world that I knew existed but couldn't articulate. It made me feel less alone, that the world made a little more sense. If there is a thread that runs though my work as an actor, director, musician and teacher, it is this: to make the invisible visible.
